There's more than one way to go "green," and if you're just starting your buying journey, you might be a bit bewildered by your options. There's one question that helps everything fall into place: What makes a Mazda PHEV such a compelling choice? Lester Glenn Mazda weighs the pros and cons of your powertrain options.
Hybrid vs. Plug-In Hybrid vs. EV
A hybrid uses a gasoline engine, a small battery pack, and electric motors to allow electric driving over short distances. This improves emissions and fuel economy over a traditional gas-powered car, but it's somewhat limited.
A plug-in hybrid like the Mazda CX-90 PHEV enlarges the battery pack and adds external charging to hybrids' traditional regenerative braking. This enables all-electric driving for longer distances than a hybrid. If a lot of your driving is local, you can go days at a time without seeing a gas station, while you also don't have to worry about finding a charger if you're on an extended road trip.
EVs forego the engine, relying only on a much larger battery pack. There are zero emissions and lower upkeep, but many drivers are still concerned about range. As a result, PHEVs are seen as a happy medium between the other two types of powertrains.
Battery Charging
Each vehicle handles charging a bit differently. All three types use regenerative braking, which uses energy from the brakes to recharge the battery pack. However, plug-in hybrids can also use Level 1 120-volt or Level 2 240-volt charging. The latter can be installed at home and is the most common type of public charger.
EVs can use Level 1, 2, or 3 charging. The last one - also called DC Fast Charging - is the quickest option, but most PHEVs can't use those stations. If you're looking for a charging station for your Mazda model, ask your Toms River Mazda dealer about the MyMazda™ app, which helps with route planning and locating charging stations.
MAZDA PHEV Options
Right now, the Mazda model lineup has two plug-in hybrids. You can choose between the Mazda CX-70 PHEV or the three-row Mazda CX-90 PHEV.
